Axially symmetrical pieces are produced by spinning rapidly rotating discs or tubes. A metal workpiece is mounted on one side of a lathe while a marble block is attached on the other. To give the product its desired shape, the block and workpiece are spun against each other whilst also applying force using a hand tool called a spoon.
The practice of spinning metal dates back thousands of years, as evidenced by paintings discovered in ancient Egypt in the 4th century. This method evolved during the Middle Ages, reaching its pinnacle during the Industrial Revolution. The art of traditional hand spinning has been retained despite the industrialization of the metal spinning process.
